Stay in Bali Long-Term with KITAP
Living abroad can be a hassle, especially when you have to keep extending your visa. That’s why foreigners are always looking for long-term solutions.
The Indonesian KITAP visa, however, is more than just a long-term stay visa for Bali—it offers a range of benefits worth exploring. Let’s take a look at who might be eligible for the KITAP visa and what steps you’ll need to take to get one.
What Does KITAP Stand For?
Most countries allow foreigners to stay long-term under special circumstances, which require applying for a specific type of residence permit. In Indonesia, the acronym you’ll come across a lot is KITAP, which stands for Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap (Permanent Stay Permit Card). If you're married to an Indonesian citizen, working, investing, or planning to retire in Indonesia, you may want to consider applying for one.
There are, however, a few things you should know before applying. First, you can only obtain a KITAP if you’ve already held and extended a KITAS (Temporary Stay Permit) multiple times. Second, you’ll need a sponsor, who will be legally responsible for you during your stay in Indonesia. Although there are several requirements, the KITAP is valid for five years, and if your expat status remains unchanged, it can be automatically extended.
Different Types of KITAP
One of the most popular types is for spouses. If you’ve held a Spouse KITAS for at least two continuous years, applying for a KITAP could save you from having to deal with annual paperwork. If you're looking to advance your career in Indonesia and have held a Work KITAS, you can apply for a Work KITAP to stay with the same employer for five continuous years.
Similarly, if you’re an Investor KITAS holder, applying for an Investor KITAP can make your business journey hassle-free, especially if you hold shares in a PT PMA. Finally, the KITAP is also available to individuals aged 55 and older who wish to retire in Indonesia while enjoying unlimited re-entries.
So, What Are the Benefits of Having a KITAP?
Besides allowing you to stay in the country for five years without frequent visa renewals, KITAP holders are eligible to apply for an Indonesian ID card, a local driver’s license, a bank account, and a credit card. You may also qualify to take out a loan. While having a KITAP allows you to apply for a MERP (Multiple Exit Re-entry Permit), if you’re also married to an Indonesian citizen, you may have the right to joint property ownership.
